Kylie, Margot, Chanel
Chanel is doing some first class marketing right now – six months into the reign of Matthieu Blazy as the house creative director. It started right away, from when he premiered his first Chanel collection in the fall… followed by the super viral subway collection in December. And then the show in January and recently at Paris Fashion Week a couple of weeks ago.
Because they allowed the hype to build from his debut, holding back the products from market until the March presentation, releasing the bags and other accessories to retail to coincide with the fashion show. And what ended up happening was… thirst. From fashion editors and influencers, all of them going into the stores to buy whatever they could. Chanel had set the demand, made people wait for it, and when the drop finally happened, everyone showed up – including, of course, their ambassadors. The ambassador list is strong right now: Nicole Kidman, Ayo Edebiri, A$AP Rocky, Jennie, and of course Margot Robbie. Finally Chanel + Margot is giving good. Good looks and also good campaigns.
The latest is one for both the fashion girlies and the pop girlies. Just released today, Margot stars in an homage to Kylie Minogue’s “Come Into My World” video from 2002, directed by Michel Gondry who also directed the original. And Kylie makes a cameo.
In a new interview with Vogue, Margot says Kylie was her first concert, in Sydney, the Fever tour, shortly after Kylie dropped the song. And Kylie a few years ago said that if there ever was a biopic, she’d want Margot to play her.
So it’s all kinds of pop culture synergy… and that’s on top of the fashion – the jeans are the star here, these are the new Chanel jeans everyone is talking about. Most of us can’t afford them but you will note, the cut of these jeans is 90s, which I just posted about a few weeks ago with recommendations. The 90s style Gap jeans I link to in that post are basically the jeans I’ve been living in for over a month now, I am so obsessed. Also they’re under $50.
