Dear Gossips,

The Golden Globe nominations will be announced this morning and we’ll have more on which films and series and performers the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is recognising this year. Because it’s the HFPA though… expect some randomness and maybe (probably?) a little foolery. Like if Michaela Coel’s name is not called out multiple times, well, since I’m already nervous about it, maybe that’s a sign. Perhaps this is just pessimism. The Globes are usually more on it on the television side than on the film side.

On the film side, it’s well-known that the HFPA is prone to being glamourised by Movie Stars. Which is why I’ve seen some predictions lists that include George Clooney receiving a directing nomination for The Midnight Sky over Regina King for One Night in Miami. Remember, the Globes is where this happened:

And it’s not like there weren’t options that year. It was 2018. Lady Bird was nominated in several categories, including Musical or Comedy Motion Picture – WHICH IT WON – and somehow Greta Gerwig was excluded from the directing group.

The current award season frontrunner for Best Director this year is Chloe Zhao for Nomadland. It would be shocking if her name is not called today. Where Regina King is concerned though, her film is expected to contend in multiple categories so she should very much be in play in the director category too. The Midnight Sky? Look, I enjoy George Clooney, but he has not directed a film that is generating the same kind of across-the-board recognition in front of and behind the camera. Still, there’s a reason why the HFPA has a reputation for being starf-ckers. But wouldn’t it just be so of this bullsh-t moment if this is the year two female directors take space in the directing and it’s not happening in the ballroom in front of a live audience of their peers?

More on the Golden Globe nominations throughout the day. I already sent Duana a text this morning that we should be braced for some “F-cking Sorkin!” Word is the HFPA is very, very high on The Trial of the Chicago 7 so there’s a good chance that film will be coming up a lot. They also really enjoy Sacha Baron Cohen and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm so there’s a strong possibility that he could be a multiple nominee.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
