Colman Domingo is on a win streak
Euphoria season three wrapped up last night, and that concludes the series overall as well, with a 90-minute supersized episode to cap off a messy and controversial run which, I guess at this point, is the show’s signature.
No matter what anyone thinks of the quality of the storytelling though, it’s undeniable that Euphoria has been a smash hit for HBO. The series three premiere outperformed the season two premiere by over 40% so by this metric, it’s a win … especially for Colman Domingo who has been on a tear.
In addition to Euphoria, Colman plays a major part in one of the most successful box office hits of the year, the Michael Jackson movie. The film has surpassed the $850 million mark at the global box office, now the highest-grossing biopic of all time. And for Colman in particular, his performance as Joe Jackson is considered to be the movie’s best chance at an Oscar nomination, perhaps even a win. It’s early, I know, but it’s worth mentioning now because of the runaway commercial success of Michael, and we already know that the Academy likes Colman – he’s already and recently been nominated in the Best Actor category in back-to-back years. And it makes him a strong contender, even with all the projects coming down the pipeline, for Best Supporting Actor this season.
Plus, he’s visible. Because he’s following up Michael with a role in Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, expected to also be a blockbuster this summer. Hollywood is generally very favourable to Spielberg, so it looks great on Colman to be involved in a television blockbuster, and a musical blockbuster, and a Spielberg blockbuster within a three-month span.
First screenings for Disclosure Day started last week and initial reaction was very positive. Some are saying this is Spielberg’s best movie in 20 years. If that hype holds up, that’s three-for-three for Colman on the big and the small screen.
Here he is in Paris today with Josh O’Connor ahead of the premiere tomorrow. And just in time for Pride. Happy Pride!
