Intro for October 21, 2026
Dear Gossips,
I posted yesterday about the state of the Oscar race and how much fun the award season discourse is right now, especially the David and Goliath situation that’s emerging between The Odyssey and You Can See Everything. Or, more succinctly, Nathan vs Nolan.
You Can See Everything, as of two days ago, is the highest-rated film on Letterboxd. It is the internet’s favourite film of the moment. It is Gen Z’s favourite film of the moment. And that’s important for more than just who wins the Oscar trophy, it could be very important for the Oscars telecast. The Academy, and so many other legacy properties, has been trying to figure out how to stay relevant with a younger audience. They’ve tried so many things, like inviting influencers onto red carpets to do silly interviews…
And now look what we have here: two movies in contention this year that have popped off big with Gen Z in Obsession and You Can See Everything. Wait a minute?! Making films that appeal to a certain demographic instead of throwing gimmicks at them?! How novel!
Anyway, back to the Nathan vs Nolan entertainment – and it would be hilarious if someone out there comes up with an edit that casts Nolan as Cyclops against Nathan’s Odysseus, I would do it if I had the patience to learn video editing – Chris Nolan’s actually interviewed Nathan Fielder before when he moderated a Q&A during promotion for The Curse. Several clips from that conversation, which also included Benny Safdie, are now going viral as the You Can See Everything buzz continues to build.
Like I said, this is the title fight everyone online wants to see. I guess this is the October surprise of our current awards race – right now, even if it’s hyperbolic, there are some people who really believe, or want to believe, that Nathan Fielder (plus Lance Oppenheim) and You Can See Everything can win Best Director and Best Picture over Nolan and The Odyssey. And the memes are GREAT.

Nathan is particularly viral right now as for days people have been pulling their favourite clips from Nathan For You and The Rehearsal celebrating the success of their awkward king. But as I mentioned yesterday, these aren’t the only two films in the field. Up until recently it was thought that Dune: Part 3 might be second on the best picture rankings behind The Odyssey. But since You Can See Everything, Dune’s vibes have been smothered.
Conveniently yesterday they dropped a promo about advance tickets featuring Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh, Robert Pattinson, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jason Momoa… basically the boldest face names from the cast.
The anticipation is definitely there, the first two Dunes did excellent business at the box office. This franchise has an invested fanbase, they will definitely show up. It’s just funny that the cinematic bout that we thought were getting, aka Dunesday (Dune vs Avengers: Doomsday) has been overshadowed by another bout for cinephiles that no one saw coming: it’s Nathan vs Nolan Autumn!
Yours in gossip,
Lainey
