Another day, another disclosure
The Disclosure Day press tour continues, this time hitting London. It also continues to be a fashion parade, thanks mostly to Colman Domingo and Josh O’Connor. Emily Blunt also contributes, but her style is hit or miss for me. She takes swings, but I don’t think she usually pulls off what she’s trying.
Today, however, she looks great in lilac.

I normally would not like the peplum, but she’s promoting a sci-fi movie, so the structured, geometrical bodice works. It looks futuristic, which is appropriate.
Meanwhile, Colman Domingo continues to be the snazziest of dressers…

While Josh O’Connor went for relaxed snazzy, for a daytime look:

The premiere also brought out Stanley Tucci and his wife, Felicity Blunt, supporting their sister, no doubt, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Benny Cukes has a busy year coming up, with Avengers: Doomsday, but also Guy Ritchie’s Wife & Dog—I do not understand the pace at which Guy Ritchie makes movies, he makes movies like David Baldacci publishes airport novels—and he is also starring in Cary Joji Fukanaga’s adaption of Jo Nesbø’s Blood on Snow. Lots going on for ole Bendy Coombs.
Oh, by the way, last month there was a whole thing about Disclosure Day skipping Cannes. This news came in conjunction with speculation that Hollywood executives are wary of film festivals, which can sometimes tag a film with press weeks, even months before it opens. But Disclosure Day has had overwhelmingly positive early word of mouth (which is, frankly, to be expected with Spielberg at this point). So that can’t have been the reason to skip Cannes. Just admit you don’t want to spend money! Spend money? In this economy? No one likes it! It would be the most relatable thing about Hollywood executives.
What else happened today…
Chase Infiniti is still having fun. Good for her. (Go Fug Yourself)
The vast majority of people watch TV with subtitles. Unsurprisingly, loud background music is a leading culprit, making dialogue hard to hear. I blame Christopher Nolan and his “but it’s so natural when you can’t hear sh-t” approach to sound design. But also, it could have to do with the fact that on flat screen TVs, the speakers are in the back of the unit, the sound is literally going directly into your wall. I have a soundbar and very rarely use subtitles. This might explain why I have been so confused about the amount of people complaining about not being able to hear their TVs. Yes, a lot of shows DO have bad sound design, just like a lot of shows are just too damn dark. There are some bad trends in production! But it didn’t even occur to me people might not have external sound, and their speakers are blaring into their walls. (Celebitchy)
Kayleigh Donaldson explores why Backrooms succeeded, when Slender Man, a 2018 film also based on online creepypasta, failed. Slender Man is a bad movie, that’s probably a big part of it. (Pajiba)
It’s summer, which means it’s swimming season. Do you know what drowning looks like? It’s not always splashy splashy! Most of the time, it’s just too quiet. Here’s an oldie but a goodie as swim season kicks off, former Coast Guard rescue swimmer Mario Vittone details the signs of drowning. It’s the #2 accidental cause of death among children, and half of all children who drown will do so within sight of an adult. Even if you don’t have kids or a pool, if there’s a chance that you’ll be around water this summer, please take the time to learn the signs of drowning. You never know what you need to know, until it’s almost too late to know it. (Slate)
