This morning, Cardi B shared exclusively on CBS Mornings that the word on the street is, in fact true, and that she and her boyfriend, New England Patriots wide receiver Steffon Diggs, are expecting a baby.

 

Fans have been going back and forth for weeks, speculating about whether she may or may not be pregnant, particularly when videos and photos of her during her civil trial earlier this month went viral. And against the backdrop of this major announcement, Cardi B has been on what may just be the most hilarious album promo tour we’ve seen in recent history. Over the last few days, Cardi has crashed The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and had a humorous and candid conversation with Kelly Rowland for Spotify. And just yesterday, she announced on social media that she’s going on tour next February.

 

But today, in an intimate interview with Gayle King, she revealed that she’s expecting baby number four, and reflected on how she’s feeling during this time.

"I feel like I'm in a good space. I feel very strong. I feel very powerful that I'm doing all this work. But I'm doing all this work while I'm creating a baby, me and my man, we're very supportive of each other," she said.

 

This is a far cry from what we heard from her during her tumultuous marriage to Offset, some of which I wrote about here. So much of the marriage was marked by infidelity, public spats and notorious and incessant Instagram lives where she would vent to her fans about what she was going through. She opened up about being hesitant to enter into a new relationship, telling Gayle that navigating her high-profile divorce gave her pause. But ultimately, Stefon won her over. She says she feels “safe” with him, which could be the reason there’s a track on her new album with that title.

“He just makes me feel safe and very confident and very strong," she told Gayle. "I mean, like, two weeks ago I was literally having a panic attack. I was, like, crying and crying and crying, just because I was just getting really nervous with you know, the whole album rollout…people were coming at me very hard." 

During the interview, she also addressed why she kept her pregnancy a secret for this long, cheekily saying she hadn’t yet told her parents. But also, she wanted to close some deals first, which suggests that the devil works hard, but Cardi B’s team works harder.

 

From a PR perspective, the timing of this announcement is impeccable. Just two days before her album drops, she is now receiving coverage in publications that, despite her level of fame, she might not have landed otherwise. Her pregnancy has landed her on platforms like ESPN and CBS Sports because of Stefon’s involvement. These are outlets she wouldn’t be in if it were just the news of her album drop. 

Needless to say, this news is a global headline. And you know what that means? It means Offset knows. And it wouldn’t be a surprise if she gave him a courtesy heads up, even if he is completely undeserving of that. But the thing about the rest of the world knowing is that we all know he knows. And for a man who once weaponized motherhood against Cardi, which I wrote about here, it’s gotta hurt. And it should.

This is why Cardi B is the undisputed lick back queen, from her vindication earlier this month with a jury of 12 unanimously in agreement that she did not assault the security guard suing her, another saga which brought tons of meme-worthy moments, to this good news that could symbolize the “happy ending” she was after. 

Offset has to reckon with the fact that she tried everything to make that marriage work, only to be met with an immature pest of a man who couldn’t give up the fast life for a life that he vowed to be committed to when he married her. So now he has to sit on the sidelines and watch as she lives that future out with someone else, as so many men in these situations find themselves having to do.

As if that’s not enough salt in his wound, she is about to hit yet another career high. During the interview, she referred to this sophomore album as one that is “complete” and “something that is not out there right now”. And that is exactly her superpower. Love her or hate her, there is no one else like Cardi B out there. And we’re all about to bear witness to that yet again through this album, through her upcoming tour, and through whatever we’re about to enjoy when she gets her latest dose of matrescence, which will undoubtedly show us all that you can be a divorcée, a mother of four, a sex symbol and a superstar, all at the same time.
