As expected, since the Timothée Chamalet lookalike contest a few weeks ago, the copycats have been relentless. There are lookalike contests popping up all over the place and all of them have been …well… kinda sad and desperate because, of course, everyone in large part is doing it in the hopes that their fave will show up.

Because of course that’s what Timmy did, and that’s why that event had that kind of cultural impact. In my opinion, it was kinda gangster that he breezed through there, took some photos, and then disappeared. How do you top that? You can’t.

That said, what I appreciate about Glen Powell’s lookalike contest is that he made it as corny as possible. Glen’s mother, Cyndy, and his aunt, Kathleen, were the judges. Since he’s out of town filming, he appeared on FaceTime and delivered a cheesy speech. The jokes are cringe, the puns are cringe (“Glen-terprise” actually made me groan out loud), it’s the opposite of what Timmy pulled off… but I actually don’t mind it. In fact, I’m kinda into it.

And the reason I’m into it is because he knows this isn’t cool. That Glen Powell, as successful as he’s become over the last couple of years, isn’t trying to hold onto whatever it is that anyone thinks is cool. Like, Jacob Elordi would never. In fact, he’d be mortified. Either way he could never. Never do what Timmy did and never do what Glen did. Glen generally not being fussed about trying to live up to Timmy’s standard as he participates in this increasingly low-rent trend and doing something for fun, just fun, is… likeable. It’s not that I like him *more* for this. But I don’t like him any less. Likeability maintained and, really, isn’t that the whole game?
