For days now the internet has been obsessed with whether or not Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney were hooking up on the set of their rom-com Anyone But You in Australia. A couple of days ago, his now ex-girlfriend Gigi Paris pretty much confirmed that they broke up. And immediately after, mainstream entertainment outlets, aka the safe places celebrities go to when they want to advance a certain narrative, started reporting on the reasons.
First Entertainment Tonight with a source saying that “Glen Powell and his (now ex) girlfriend Gigi Paris broke up in early April. The breakup was amicable". The source also wants us to know that Glen is "not dating his co-star Sydney Sweeney".
Then came PEOPLE with even more detail:
“Glen Powell's girlfriend Gigi Paris appeared to be hinting at a breakup when she shared a video of herself walking alone on Instagram Wednesday with the caption: "know your worth & onto the next."
But a source tells PEOPLE the couple, who started dating in 2019 and were first spotted together vacationing in Punta Mita, Mexico, in January 2020, had called it quits several weeks ago — and it wasn't the first time.
"Gigi and Glen had broken up several times," the source tells PEOPLE. "They had been on the rocks since Top Gun came out. Gigi was never happy with the long distance filming and when she came to Australia [where Powell was filming Anyone But You] they both decided to break up for good."
PEOPLE’s sources insist that Sydney had nothing to do with why Glen and Gigi are no longer together:
"Gigi only unfollowed Sydney on social media because Sydney never followed her back. This had nothing to do with Glen and Sydney. Gigi is aware that Glen and Sydney never hooked up," the source says, adding that the model felt the distance when Glen was on set. "He takes his work very seriously and it was tough on the relationship."
And as to Powell and Sweeney's friendly vibes on set? "They're filming a movie that's a romantic comedy!" the second insider says. "It's like when people say about movie stars, 'Oh, they have such good chemistry.' It's just their job. They're friends that met on set. They're costars."
So ostensibly this was never about Sydney, it was about schedules:
"The first source echoes that distance is what drove Powell and Paris apart: "It wasn't about infidelity. She's on different coasts modeling, he's on different coasts filming. When she left, they were on great terms."
There is some evidence to support that Glen and Gigi are indeed still on great terms. She still has this up on her feed:
Browse through the comments though. He is getting draggggged. People are telling her to delete the photo. People out there are big mad because they’re not buying that there’s nothing between Glen and Sydney. And that’s why these sources are speaking to these outlets all like, the boy isn’t a cheater. I’m not sure anyone is convinced though. Which is why Glen’s team is concerned. He’s been on a career high since Top Gun: Maverick. And now the culture is calling him a f-ckboy.
If you were Gigi, would you do him a solid? They’re supposedly on great terms, right? So if you were her, and there was no cheating, would you post something to help him out here? To shut down the speculation?
Because she’s not only not clarifying, she’s been cryptic for days. Remember, at the beginning of the week, as Cody wrote in his post, Gigi posted a screenshot of Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” in her stories. She was also listening to Fleetwood Mac’s “Silver Springs”. Not exactly a happy love song.
Those posts were part of the reason why everyone was gossiping so hard about this situation. And it’s not like Gigi didn’t see the reaction. She knows what people have been assuming – so it’s not really giving “great terms” that she hasn’t seemed all that interested in changing people’s minds. Which is why none of this pro-Glen PR is changing people’s minds.
