13 Going on 2027

It’s been known for a while that Netflix is doing a remake of 13 Going on 30 with Emily Bader and Logan Lerman in the lead roles originally played by Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo.

Yesterday however they made additional casting confirmations. I haven’t watched the movie in a while but I don’t remember this many characters?

For fans of The Pitt, this is great news for Supriya Ganesh, that she’s signing on for more opportunities after exiting the series, and the conversation that followed her departure about what that show is doing with its female characters. Curious to see what Jessica Alba’s role will be and how much screentime she’ll get, along with Taylor Zakhar Perez who’s coming in with his own fanbase given the popularity of Red, White & Royal Blue.

The leads work for me, though. Emily Bader is coming off People We Meet On Vacation, a solid hit earlier this year. And Logan Lerman definitely has the soft charm required to step into Mark Ruffalo’s shoes. My only question is, like, the time jump. It’s looking like they’re 30 years old in 2026/27 (when the movie comes out) which means that 17 years prior is 2014, LOOOLLLLL. In the original movie, the time span was 1987 and 2004 which, in my opinion, are much more distinguishably different than 2014 and 2026 – although maybe I’m just old and the last two decades are blurring together and a teenager would see it differently.

Like I said, I don’t hate the idea of this reboot, it’s a good story, it’s a cult favourite, it will likely play across generations and… Jennifer Garner and Judy Greer are indeed coming back. They first became friends, and then best friends, on this movie.

There has been speculation, there’s been some coy phrasing on Jen Garner’s part about her involvement, but now there are set photos of Jenna Rink taken this week that confirm (along with Netflix’s official statement) that she and Judy’s Lucy are back. And it looks like they’re back in the present (or future) because they have scenes with Emily at 30 and not whoever Emily will be at 13. Which I guess means that Emily isn’t Jenna but could be old/young enough to be Jenna’s kid? I am already so confused with all the timeslip math, help.
