Intro for November 10, 2025
Dear Gossips,
It was a big weekend for Elle Fanning with two movies opening on Friday and both of them doing great business at the box office. Predator: Badlands exceeded projections, debuting with $80 million worldwide, the biggest in franchise history with surprisingly good reviews. Sentimental Value, meanwhile, brought in $200K from just four screens in limited release, which represents the best per theatre average of 2025.
Joachim Trier’s film, which won the Grand Prix in Cannes, has been an Oscar contender for months, and this only solidifies its position in the race for nominations in multiple categories…
Including Elle for Best Supporting Actress, alongside co-star Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas who, in my opinion, gives the stronger performance between the two. But this is looking like a pretty tight category. Ariana Grande, of course, is carrying a lot of buzz right now for her work in Wicked: For Good, since we’re now hearing that there’s much more focus on Galinda/Glinda in the second film. But in addition to Ariana, Elle, and Inga, there’s also Teyana Taylor's undeniably powerful performance in One Battle After Another. And right now at least, Amy Madigan in Weapons seems to be landing on most of the predictions lists as part of the top five.
I wish more people were talking about Wunmi Mosaku in Sinners, though. And I wonder when more people are going to start talking about Sinners, period. Sinners has been quiet the last couple of months as award season hype and campaigning has become more intense. This is one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year, an original story by Ryan Coogler with breathtaking performances, a killer soundtrack, and a HUGE box office. But from the beginning, when it roared to the front of the pack with an early release date in April, there seemed to be industry forces mobilised against Sinners. Some media outlets were weirdly negative about how it was doing at the box office. Hollywood insiders were sniping about Ryan Coogler owning the rights to his own film, based on his own ideas and vision. Sarah and I, for months now, have been sidebar texting our worries that Sinners will get f-cked over by the Oscars. Joanna Robinson said it out loud this weekend on Twitter.
SINNERS not winning a single Oscar (likely) is my actual nightmare.

Same, Jo, same.
That said, the Sinners team doesn’t seem to be thirsting over it either. They haven’t disappeared but they’re far from desperate. Also, Sinners was just nominated for five Grammys last week, becoming one of the most Grammy-nominated films of all time.
Yours in gossip,
Lainey
