Julia Roberts Always Commits

Lainey and I have lots and lots in common – both as people and in our pop culture interests. But arguably what makes us both better are the parts that belong to only one of us, like musical theatre or the K-pop oeuvre. We learn by osmosis from each other, and something she explained to me that’s thoroughly outside my daily purview is the concept of a ‘bias’, which I love, both for the way it inverts the word and because it’s frankly very real.

I’m not sure if it’s acceptable to use ‘bias’ outside its’ intended sphere, but if I were going to co-opt it, I know Lainey and I would both agree that Julia Roberts is probably my ultimate bias. I love the way she moves in the world, I love that because she’s been famous for almost forty years she’s completely unflappable, and though I value her first, and most, as an actor, I’ll take her as a confident star in almost any situation.

The million-watt smile is a given. Obviously. As is the firm-but-affectionate grip on someone’s hand as they escort her to the step-and-repeat. Where she dazzles, in her menswear-inspired shirt and bowtie and her glittery …puffer coat?

…in September?

 Look.

Some might say that a luxury outerwear brand might want to plan its events at a time where VIP guests could effortlessly wear their garments.  Or if not a time – it is Fashion Week, after all –, maybe a place. Refrigerated warehouse, maybe?  I can even imagine the anxiety as the publicity team watched the temperatures in New York, which peaked at 31 C/87 F yesterday!

But they shouldn’t have worried. Because Julia is going to rock in shouldering a parka like a shawl, as though that’s how she always navigates a balmy September evening, to the point where we barely raise an eyebrow.

My bias remains unchallenged and intact, and if she’s now yours too, you’re welcome.
