Since Freakier Friday came out last year, there has been some conversation about Lindsay Lohan and her comeback, which now appears complete.

Returning to acting in the post-pandemic era, Lohan’s comeback was fueled at first by chintzy Netflix romances like Falling For Christmas and Irish Wish, but after several years of proving she’s capable and reliable, she is back in dramatic acting roles in big studio/network projects. Her next project is the Hulu miniseries Count My Lies, starring alongside Shailene Woodley. Both women were on set in New York yesterday.

Count My Lies is based on Sophie Stava’s mystery/thriller novel of the same name. It’s about a woman who tells “little white lies”, talks her way into a nanny job with a rich New York family, and wouldn’t you know it, the family turns out to have secrets, too. Sounds like every fourth movie and second book coming out these days. The book is popular, though, and Hulu is certainly resourcing the series well, which also includes Kit Harington in the cast.

The rich New York couple is played by Lohan and Harington, with Woodley playing the lying nanny. I’ll be honest, I had Lohan pegged as the liar, mainly because she does devious so well. The range of Lindsay Lohan is that she can do everything from screwball comedy to soap operatic dramatic acting, Shailene Woodley on the other hand… Well, she’s not a bad actress, but the range is more limited, and she was never the standout in Big Little Lies.

Another home truth is that these types of books are not my bag, and I rarely like the movies/series made from them. Gone Girl is the exception that proves the rule, that is a GREAT movie, perfectly cast, but the endless Colleen Hoover parade can end any time and I won’t miss it. I fully own being a book snob. I do not read just anything, ask Lainey, whose book recs I am constantly rejecting. The mystery novel I WILL recommend is The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, about 11-year-old Flavia de Luce, who has a penchant for poisons and must solve a murder at her family’s crumbling estate.

But if you’re looking for book recs, or a community of readers to join, members of The Squawk, led by Alison, have started a book club.

They’re actually debating the first book, because Lady Tremaine is a new release and in high demand at libraries. So if you’re interested, check out the new book club thread in The Squawk chat.
