Meghan Markle made a surprise appearance this weekend when the New York Yankees played the Boston Red Sox in London. Major League Baseball partnered with the Invictus Games for the event so Prince Harry was always expected to attend but Meghan, who’s been on maternity leave since Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was born, showed up too, giving the day and the sport a much bigger platform in England.
Both teams presented the couple with gear for baby Archie. The signature House Sussex handholding was on display. And Meghan met Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts who was identified last year as a distant relative but Harry did take a shot at the Red Sox as he compared gifts. It was a joke, Boston!

Also, baby Archie’s christening – we now have a date: Saturday July 6 at Windsor Castle. Official portraits will be released the next day and there’s been some bitching about this because with the House Cambridge christenings, photographers were able to capture the family arriving and leaving and this time, with Archie, there won’t be opportunity to do that. I can understand this because sometimes those shots, of Big G and Charlotte showing up to their little brother’s christening last year, for example, and the parents holding the infant on their way in, are more exciting than the posed shots in some staid sitting room.
That said, this is a classic celebrity move on Meghan’s part. Like how Beyoncé does it. Beyoncé prefers to let you see her when she decides you should see her. And it’s almost always worth it, when Beyoncé presents Beyoncé on Beyoncé’s time. Royal Meghan has been working on the same skill. When Archie was born there were only two cameras and a reporter allowed at his introduction, and the British press complained. Then she dropped the money shot on Instagram:
I wonder, then, what we’re going to get with Archie’s christening. To date, we’ve not yet seen a photo of Prince Charles with his youngest grandson. That might be a moment. Or maybe it’s a shot of all the children together – Big G, Charlotte, Louis, and now Archie, just them, all of Diana’s grandchildren together in one picture. Meghan Markle knows how to generate the likes.
More on Meghan in the next post. For now, note one of the pictures in the Canada Day carousel on the House Sussex Instagram yesterday – it’s the last one, a Roots jacket…and the initials on it: “AW” for Archie Windsor!
