Dear Gossips,

By the time you’re reading this, the Knicks parade will be happening in NYC. The ticker-tape parade was invented in New York City, it’s become a New York City tradition, along the Canyon of Heroes, and today the city’s basketball team will be celebrated by its citizens, the first time in franchise history since there were no parades in the 70s for their previous championships.

Viewing areas were already full hours before the parade kicked off with people camping out overnight. New Yorkers are saying they’ve never seen the subway so packed. At City Hall, the team will receive the keys to the city from Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Alicia Keys is set to perform – obviously the song choice will be “Empire State of Mind”. This is the song the fans were singing in the streets after the Knicks pulled of their win. The song “surged 1,245% among Spotify users in New York City, according to Rolling Stone, and hit a new single-day Spotify peak with 1.5M+ streams.  “Concrete jungle where dreams are made of, there’s nothing you can’t do, now you’re in New York… ”, we’ve all known those lyrics for almost 20 years, well beyond New York.

Speaking of the lyrics though, Jay-Z was prophetic on that track. “I’m the new Sinatra” right off the top and he isn’t wrong. That’s not to say that Frank’s “Theme from New York, New York” isn’t New York but in these times, particularly for this generation, “Empire State of Mind” has become “the new Sinatra”. And even the line “Catch me at the X with OG at the Yankee game” works now because of OG Anunoby, of course.

OG was on FaceTime with Alicia yesterday confirming her appearance and she made a joke about his demeanor. This is about as animated as he gets.

While Alicia is confirmed, there’s been no word on Jay, though reportedly it’s doubtful that he’ll make an appearance. Hip-hop was born in New York City and the Knicks are the team most closely associated with the artform so hip-hop will be represented, even if Jay-Z isn’t there. It has been announced that there will be a hip-hop float, led by Fat Joe, that will also include Wu-Tang, Mary J Blige, Jadakiss, Fabolous, and more.

As for Timothée Chalamet, he is rumoured to be part of the parade, of course he will, LOL. Not sure if he’ll actually be on the team float but everyone by now has seen how tight he is with the team, tight enough to be in the locker room and sprayed with champagne.

Timmy and Kylie Jenner were seen biking around the city yesterday ahead of today’s historic event. What’s the over/under on whether or not she’ll be with him at the parade?

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
