With the Spider-Man: Brand New Day press tour underway, it’s time for a new trailer…which already leaked online. Sony is having a really hard time keeping Brand New Day under wraps, the first trailer leaked during the holidays, and now the second trailer leaked, too. (This is on Sony, they handle the Spider-Man assets, not Marvel.) I mean, silver lining style, it is an indicator of how anticipated this movie is that no one wants to wait for it. Brand New Day is expected to be one of the biggest movies of the summer.

And it looks great. I liked the first trailer, and I like this second one, too. No Way Home serves up some of the biggest consequences anyone has ever faced in the MCU, and it really looks like Brand New Day is honoring that and Peter Parker is going to have to rebuild his life without any cheat codes or magic to fix things. But while he’s trying to do that, his powers are going haywire and he is developing more and stronger of the spider powers he got from his radioactive spider bite (which we never actually saw on film because the Spider-Man franchise is probably the narratively tightest in the MCU and doesn’t waste time on stuff we all already know).

Brand New Day seems to be borrowing from “Man-Spider”, a story in which Peter’s spider bite mutates until he is literally a man spider. It’s pretty horrifying. If that is where Brand New Day is going, I am IN. This is already one of the saddest storylines going in the MCU, let’s keep heaping trauma on Peter Parker. Tom Holland makes such a good sad face.

It also just LOOKS cool, as director Destin Daniel Cretton, having cut his teeth on Shang-Chi, now really knows what he’s doing making large-scale movies like this. The shots of Spider-Man taking on the ninja sect The Hand are awesome. And I am intrigued by Jon Bernthal’s Punisher showing up here. One consistent thing with Bernthal’s Frank Castle is that he is good with kids. Peter is now in his 20s, but still A Youth compared to Frank. I look forward to whatever weird vibe they get going. Also, Jon Bernthal is in The Odyssey, too! Half the Brand New Day cast is in The Odyssey.

I know Marvel has been in a slump. Less and less creatively, as they’ve done some good work over the last couple of years, but audiences still haven’t bought back in to rival 2010 levels. But I think Spider-Man will be the exception, and audiences will turn up for Brand New Day. Honestly, the biggest problem facing Brand New Day is less anything to do with superhero fatigue and the MCU, and more that The Odyssey opens just two weeks before Brand New Day. I do think both movies will do well, I just think they would both do BETTER with more breathing room between them. Once again! Timing is everything! Spread these f-cking movies OUT!
