New York City is unquestionably the home of The Devil Wears Prada. Runway, like Vogue, is based in New York. Runway is the office space, the setting, the spiritual nucleus – and both the sequel and the original are movies about work. They work in fashion, but beyond the clothes and the shoes and the bags, this is a story about people who love to work. Maybe a little too much.

So while, of course, there are international locations in The Devil Wears Prada, NYC is the base which is why, obviously, the New York premiere is where all the talent were gathered, all four lead members of the cast present and turned all the way up: Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci. Plus the supporting cast members – Simone Ashley, Lucy Liu, and of course Lady Gaga.

I was in New York to screen the film and cover the junket for ETALK this past weekend, more of my observations to come as we get closer to the release date. Also I can never remember when and what we can and can’t share so all I’ll say here is that I’m not sure I can be objective: I loved it.

For now, let’s talk about the fashion… because that’s such a big part of this spectacle – when Meryl is serving spectacle, it’s a spectacle. This is red, Givenchy, majestic and superior, like Miranda Priestley, and as you can see, Meryl is feeling it.

Annie showed up in red too. Custom red Louis Vuitton. This dress is actually demented – the construction, the fit, the fabric, the way it looks impenetrable but also, like, supple? Without a wrinkle or a crease from any angle? Come on, there’s nothing to debate here, she is exquisite.

Emily Blunt also saved it for this moment, because this is the best thing she’s worn in a long time. Schiaparelli, all the drama from every direction. The detail through the bodice is insane, and the fact that it’s pouffed out at the front and cut short is precisely what sets it apart from an ordinary ballgown.

Here’s Gaga, rather subdued in black, which I think is intentional. Gaga makes a cameo in the movie, and she’s on the soundtrack, she’s here to support, she’s happy to be a part of it, and she’s aware that she is not the story. That’s what this is saying, and I rate it.

Unfortunately I’m not really feeling the green mullet dress on Simone Ashley. That said, having now talked to her in person, seen her up close, it almost doesn’t matter what she’s wearing because that face card makes up for anything.

And OMG Lucy Liu in George Hobeika, better than how it looked on the runway.

You know who was speculated to be in the movie but isn’t in the movie? I saw the movie, all of us who’ve seen the movie did not see Sydney Sweeney in the movie. Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna was asked by Screenrant about Sydney Sweeney on set, this was the exchange:

ScreenRant: So can I ask, was Sydney originally in this film?

Aline Brosh McKenna: Well, you saw the movie. She's not in the movie.

ScreenRant: She's not in the final cut.

Aline Brosh McKenna: Yes.

ScreenRant: So, was she a character written possibly for the third movie, if there's going to be one?

Aline Brosh McKenna: Don't know. I would do a hundred movies with this cast. I would do any kind of movie.

David Frankel (the director): We're not getting ahead of ourselves here.

Aline Brosh McKenna: I would do a James Bond movie. I would do an action movie. I'd do whatever they want.

So was that not Sydney who was seen on the set that day? Or was it but they just didn’t end up using her scene in the film?
