As Sarah predicted in her Cannes preview earlier this week, one of the highlights of the festival would be Elle Fanning’s fashion. She was right – but not for her opening night dress which, you’d THINK, would have been the statement but I was kind of underwhelmed:
This is, in theory, a perfect Cannes dress. You know why it wasn’t a mic drop for me though? She already wore the perfect Cannes princess dress back in 2017. The 2019 Gucci is not an improvement on that.
HOWEVER.
The Valentino she wore the next night was… SUBLIME.
I am partial to this particular collection though. You remember – it’s the one that moved Celine Dion to tears, the frothiest runway in a season that was already full of so much froth. Gemma Chan wore a piece from that collection to the Oscars. To me, it’s one of the best collections of the last decade, if not the last two decades. This collection was made for Cannes. And this dress is going to be hard to top for the next 7 days.
The only minor, very minor, thing I would change is her hair. We’ve seen Elle Fanning do a braid crown already so many times. A hair change, maybe big and kinky and wild, would have been a nice shakeup.
