Pharrell’s Olympic Collection
It has been exactly a year since Pharrell’s debut collection for Louis Vuitton menswear was presented with Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Rihanna, and Zendaya, among others, in attendance.
Pharrell succeeded a true fashion visionary, Virgil Abloh, in the role and since his appointment, LVMH, the parent company, has gotten what it wanted out of their choice. Pharrell’s shows have been showstoppers, extremely high-profile, and this most recent one is no different. In particular because Paris is the site of this summer’s Olympics, and LV is one of the sponsors of these Games and the involvement includes the brand’s exclusive Medals and Torch trunks specifically designed for the occasion. So the new spring/summer collection is Olympic and athletic themed, and travel themed – a global fashion showcase meant to align with the brand’s legacy – aligned with the timing of the Olympics and also the Euros which are underway right now. One of the new bags actually looks like a football. The venue, as you can see, was very Olympic-coded.
You will also note that the models chosen to be shown in that clip above were all Black. Today is Juneteenth, and the presentation happened on Juneteenth eve – which I would imagine had to be top of mind for Pharrell; a few years ago, Pharrell was actively involved in making Juneteenth a holiday in his home state of Virginia. And in the caption for that IG post, it says that the collection was created from “the darkest pigment on the spectrum…in a nuanced exploration of colour and texture”. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that this work is a celebration of Blackness. As he explained (per The Guardian):
“[We are] just committed to that notion [to] show the world how beautiful we are as a species from the Blackest of the Black to the whitest of the white.” This came through in the casting of the show and how the models’ outfits were designed to match with their different skin tones. Ultimately, he said, the show was designed to be “about unity and the oneness of what one could look like when you just invite everybody in as a whole.”
As always, it was a stacked guest list in attendance, including Anderson .Paak. and Colman Domingo who, as usual, had the best fit. LOOK AT THIS MAN. The pleated denim kilt-shorts under the waistcoat and jacket with that crossbody – here he is, the baddest of the baddest, dancing with BamBam:

As for Anderson, he’s still working with Pharrell’s LV cowboy vibe, but what I really want to talk about right now is how he’s recently wrapped up shooting a film in Seoul that he co-wrote and stars in called K-Pops!. This is the synopsis:
“K-Pops! follows a washed-up musician from Los Angeles who attempts to reinvigorate his career by joining a band for a K-Pop competition show in Seoul and discovers that his long-lost son has the chance to front one of the country’s hottest new groups. He jumps at the opportunity to capitalize on his son’s stardom for his renaissance but ultimately learns that fatherhood is much more fulfilling and meaningful.”
Anderson’s son, Soul Rasheed, is a huge BTS fan and a few years ago, Anderson often shared the cutest videos of him doing BTS choreo and just generally losing his sh-t over BTS:

Anderson has also collaborated with BTS and he was working with aespa a few months ago and my point is, AP knows his K-pop. And K-pops! is a great idea, I want this movie NOW.
