Intro for May 12, 2026
Dear Gossips,
Last year around-ish this time, Prime was preparing for the release of the final season of The Summer I Turned Pretty (they just started filming the movie a few weeks ago, the release date has not been announced). For a lot of women, at least in the west, much of the summer of 2025 was dominated by The Summer I Turned Pretty hysteria. And not just girls, millennial women made up a huge part of the TSITP audience. This summer Prime is hoping to connect with that audience again – but hornier.
Another television adaptation based on a book series by a Canadian author about hockey players and their lovers is about to blow up. The first book in Elle Kennedy’s Off-Campus series is called The Deal, featuring Briar University hockey team captain Garrett Graham getting into a fake relationship with music major Hannah Wells in exchange for tutoring (him) and making her crush jealous (her). It’s a familiar trope, it’s a formula that works – in this case so well that season one is dropping tomorrow and season two has already been greenlit.
I read the first three Off-Campus books when they came out, so I covered the Off-Campus junket for ETALK a few weeks ago so I’ve seen the first few episodes of the show and I can tell you, as the kids say, they understood the assignment. Creator and co-showrunner Louisa Levy understood the assignment. She’s a romance fan, she understands what those who read the books and are coming to the series with Expectations want to see. Specifically she knows that, not unlike Heated Rivalry, there are signature scenes that people are waiting for, signature dialogue, narrative beats and rhythm that the audience is extremely invested in. And she delivers.
This is an “enemies-to-lovers and fake dating slow burn until it combusts” story. And there is no point putting a book to screen if you’re taking away or cooling down the heat. The female gaze has been served, and consent has been respected.
And the OTP chemistry is there. It’s there from the first episode, it builds and builds until… well… THAT moment, perhaps the most anticipated moment from the book, IYKYK, and of course they’re not going to spoil it during promo but here’s a good placeholder.
If you’re into het romance and you’re looking for a new horny binge, Off-Campus hits the spot.
Yours in gossip,
Lainey
