Alright, it’s Friday, enough of that heavy sh-t. Here is Simu Liu in a great print with a great grin going into Good Morning America to promote his new memoir, We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story.
I picked up Simu’s book at the airport a couple days ago and blew through it much faster than I expected to—it’s an engrossing read, in turns funny and shrewd, a cut above the average celebrity memoir because Simu actually has a story to relate about cultural and generation gaps, not only between his two countries, China and Canada, but also with his parents. It’s insightful and incisive, and I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a summer read that’s breezy but still substantive.
Also this week, Simu turned out in primary blue for the Time 100 Gala, which he hosted (it will air Sunday night). Simu has had a fast rise over the last year, becoming an international star with Shang-Chi, and now popping up everywhere from SNL to gala dinners to the New York Times bestseller list. And now, he is here on a Friday to give us a palate cleanser, to take our minds off things for a minute and let us contemplate only the perfect angle of his hair swoop. Or maybe it will be five minutes. Or however long it takes for the anxiety of all this sh-t happening to go away. Maybe I’ll be staring at Simu’s hair swoop for a while.
