Michael B Jordan appeared via video last night during the Amazon MGM presentation to advance-hype his next directorial effort, The Thomas Crown Affair, co-starring Taylor Russell, which he’ll be shooting in London this summer. He couldn’t be there in person, however, because he’s currently on the Sinners press tour.
He and Ryan Coogler were with the cast (Wunmi Mosaku, Hailee Steinfeld) in London, then Mexico, and yesterday it was New York City where they both appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. MBJ is a regular on the late night circuit but it’s not often that we see Ryan in this setting.
What I like so much about this, the fact that they’re doing it together, is that these two are the director-muse relationship of their generation. And should be revered as such. Coogler and Jordan are still only in their 30s and already their collaborations are iconic – and I don’t say this hyperbolically. Jimmy can explain:
They’re about to add Sinners to this list, one of the most anticipated movies of the season, and while on the surface it’s being sold as a vampire movie, since this is Coogler, and he wrote it in addition to directing and producing, there is no doubt that we’re not just in for a thriller but a film that addresses much more complex themes. During the interview with Jimmy, he talks about how he came up with the idea, that it’s inspired by the music his uncle James would listen to – and he says that “Delta blues music is the most important contribution to global pop culture” and much of the film centers around that idea. So we’re going muuuuch deeper than vampires. Or, perhaps, the vampires are taking, having taken much more than just blood. This is why I have to see this vampire movie even though scary movies are not my thing. Because it’s Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan.
