Last time we checked in on Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro, they were in Japan and mostly unbothered. That was mid-April, and now they’re in New York. This week, when you see a celebrity in New York, it’s not a certainty that they’re heading to the Met Gala…but it’s a high possibility. Especially if they’re staying at one of the hotels close by where celebrities are known to get ready, like The Mark. Which is where Andrew and Monica were photographed.
The Mark even produces hats every year, only 100 of them, exclusively for those who are attending the event. If you’re rich and famous, there is no shortage of luxury accommodation in New York – so if you’re staying at The Mark… well… you’re either desperado for people to think you’re heading to the Met Gala or you’re going to the Met Gala. Neither Andrew nor Monica seem like the type to fall under the first category.
Andrew’s been to the Met Gala before, but not in a while. His last appearance there was in 2019. Monica has never – but she’s now an Oscar nominee, Anna Wintour would have no issues with her on the guest list (Anna signs off on every person attending). Also, Monica recently signed on as an ambassador for Dior (she wore Dior at the Oscars) so if she’s there, there’s a good chance this is what she’ll be wearing.
As for Andrew, he wore Gucci to the Oscars, not officially one of Gucci’s ambassadors but almost every major fashion house hosts a table at the Met Gala, populating it with their guests. Gucci, right now, is in transition. Sabato De Sarno took over from Alessandro Michele a couple of years ago and there just wasn’t the same buzz. He’s since stepped down and in March it was announced that Demna, who co-founded Vetements, would be taking over after a ten year stint at Balenciaga. Demna’s final Balenciaga collection will be presented in July so he hasn’t officially started at Gucci yet. But that doesn’t mean Gucci won’t want to have some sort of presence at the Met Gala, and fashion houses usually look to celebrities they have an established relationship with to fill their seats. Will be interesting to see what Andrew wears – if he shows up at all. It may just be Monica and he’ll stay back at the hotel?
Dua Lipa and Callum Turner are also in New York right now. Dua’s pretty regular at the Met Gala now, but Callum’s never been. This couple might be a debut too.
Finally, Rosalía is in town, she too has been attending the event pretty steadily. Can’t say that I’ve really locked into any one of her previous looks but I do like this fit she has on in advance of the party. Could be promising.
Interestingly enough, her ex, Jeremy Allen White, also happens to be in New York. He was seen at the SNL after-party on the weekend. JAW has never been to the Met Gala but now that he’s a Calvin Klein ambassador, this might be part of the deal. Might. The official Met Gala guest list is usually kept secret until the event starts but the speculation today is endless.
