Here is a string of names designed to make cinephiles wet: Robert Pattinson and Zendaya will co-star in a new film from director Kristoffer Borgli, which is being produced by Ari Aster. The film is called The Drama and it’s backed by tastemaker production company A24. Details are scarce, but maybe it’s about a couple who melt down before their wedding day. Rpattz and Zendaya—RpattZ?—are in talks to play the couple.
Maybe the one name you don’t recognize is Kristoffer Borgli, but this is a name you WILL know, much like we now know Ari Aster to be a filmmaker of unique scope and vision (also, I learned that he was freaked out by Dick Tracy as a kid, which is somehow the most Ari Aster detail a filmmaker could have in their biography). Borgli directed last year’s strange and interesting Dream Scenario, which features one of Nicolas Cage’s all-time best performances. But even more importantly, Kristoffer Borgli—who is Norwegian, the more you know!—also directed DRIB, which is sort of like the Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping of fake energy drink documentaries. Also, it features a GREAT performance from Brett Gelman.
So this is what we know about Kristoffer Borgli so far:
- Is Norwegian
- Can make movies in the vein of Spinal Tap and Popstar
- Reliably gets brilliant performances from brilliant actors
- Attracted the attention of Ari Aster
Everyone’s going to make a big deal out of the new film because it follows Dream Scenario, which is Borgli’s breakout film. But for me it is DRIB, it will always be DRIB. The only reason DRIB isn’t Borgli’s breakout film is because we are not a good and just society (the same reason Popstar flopped in theaters, frankly). We don’t deserve films like DRIB.
Maybe we don’t deserve films like The Drama! The DRIB guy + RPattz + Zendaya + Ari Aster??? This is too much. But then, perhaps it is a little justice for whatever the f-ck is happening to Mickey 17, and the preposterously long wait for The Batman II. Why is everyone dicking around Robert Pattinson’s upcoming films? THAT should be the subject of a documentary.
