Friday November 25 was International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. According to UN Women, “one in three women around the world experience violence in their lifetime, often in the hands of someone they know, love and trust. Of all women who were victims of homicide globally in 2012, almost half were killed by intimate partners or family members”. This year the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign runs from November 25 to December 10, which is Human Rights Day, to raise awareness about the impact of violence against women, to let women know they are not alone, and to encourage everyone to rethink the way we talk and think about domestic violence and its victims, so to create more safe spaces for women to come forward. In support of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Towards Women, Amanda de Cadenet has launched a project called Girl Gaze. You’ll recall, Amanda was with Amber Heard after she filed for divorce from Johnny Depp and very publicly supported Amber when Amber’s allegations against Johnny were revealed. This weekend, Girl Gaze released a domestic violence PSA featuring an emotional Amber recalling her experience being abused “in the public arena”, how she was able to move forward, with help, how she was able to “speak up”.

Obviously Amber doesn’t mention Johnny. And according to the terms of their settlement, she’s not allowed to. But she also doesn’t have to. It’s not like we don’t know who she’s talking about. It’s not like we don’t know who she was married to. In the end, they agreed to a $7 million settlement, which she immediately announced she’d be donating to the American Civil Liberties Union with focus on domestic violence and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. So this PSA, on top of all the photos we’ve seen, of her bruised face, of her cut lip, and the eyewitness statements, and the fact that she didn’t take any of his money, all of this is, well, all of it leads back to Johnny Depp. And he can’t say sh-t about it.
