Usually when a celebrity couple splits, all the attention goes to the famous half.

In the case of Jennifer Meyer and Tobey Maguire, I’m much more interested in the non-famous side. Jen is one of my favourite people to follow on Instagram because her social circle is like A-list meets socialite meets fashion designer. She knows everyone. This is not an exaggeration. Dasha Zubkova, the Foster sisters, Derek Blasberg, Kate Hudson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon… that’s a Tuesday night for Jen. Her jewellery business is exploding, she’s on her second clothing collaboration with Barneys and this summer she did a sneaker line with Superga (I have a pair, they are great).

Through all this, she posts snippets from her vacations on yachts, at birthday parties and hanging out with her famous friends. And I think one of the things that’s so appealing about Jen is that yes she’s obviously wealthy (she is the daughter of Ron Meyer, Vice Chair of NBCUniversal) but she seems like a very normal, pretty person. She doesn’t have LA face. It’s so rare for a woman in her social circle to not mess with her face that she stands out for looking so fresh.

On social media, Jen rarely included photos of her husband, but there are indications that he was nearby. She’s tight with his friends, like Kevin Connolly. She hit up Leo’s Oscars after-party. And Tobey showed up occasionally.

Jen was kind of like the First Wife of the Wolf Pack. Tobey seemed to have balance, and Jen seemed to help with that. Some of the best photos of Leo (Uncle Leo!) are when he’s helping carry Ruby and Otis around. In fatherhood, Tobey wasn’t totally cut off from his friends, and she was as friendly as a wife could be with a bunch of model hounds.

They seemed strong, and back in May Lainey wondered how Tobey managed hanging with his single friends. It’s not like Tobey is at 1Oak on a Tuesday night, but he does occasionally make it out with his boys. And where there’s a Wolf Pack, there’s minimum a dozen models looking for Leo or someone Leo-adjacent. Still, there was never a whiff of scandal there, no rumours about him in that way. In August, Jen, Tobey and Lukas Haas went to a Radiohead concert together.

So what happened? What happened between August and now? Is it simply a case of growing apart? Were they privately off-and-on, trying to make it work but separated over the summer?

It might not have nothing to do with any of that. Maybe it goes back, way back, all the way to 2014. Remember Molly’s Game? It was all about high-stakes poker and how a person’s character shows up at the table. One guy, “Tobey,” was petty, cheap and got off on bullying people. In real life, Tobey even had to pay back some of his winnings from shady games. He was a very serious poker player. Did he give that up after all the trouble, or…?
