As we are poised to receive Kristen Stewart’s Princess Diana this weekend as Spencer opens theatrically today, let’s check in on the previous pop culture Princess Diana, Emma Corrin. They're in Venice shooting a new adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, looking very 1920s glam. Jack O’Connell is playing Oliver, and Joely Richardson is Mrs. Bolton, which is a great piece of casting. I’m not a massive DH Lawrence fan, but the director of Chatterley is Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre who, besides sounding like the heroine of a vampire novel, also directed the stellar 2019 film The Mustang. I’m interested to see what she makes of Lawrence’s novel. And after such a breakout moment with The Crown, I’m curious to see what Emma Corrin’s next act looks like.

After Chatterley, Corrin will star in an FX limited series called Retreat. FX is not the sexiest network, but they consistently put out interesting and mostly good series—they were the home of Justified—and Retreat comes from collaborators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, who are behind The OA and The East and Sound of My Voice. Corrin plays a “Gen Z amateur detective” and the series is described as a “radical conceptualization of the whodunit”. I feel like Only Murders in the Building, and to a lesser extent Search Party, got there first, but okay. I found The OA unbearable, but I will give any detective story a try, and I really do want to see how Corrin steers their career coming off The Crown. We’ve seen Claire Foy and Vanessa Kirby turn into movie stars, can The Crown go three for three on launching new actors into the stratosphere?
