Dear Gossips,

Sally Rooney’s Normal People was released in North America a year ago this month and became an instant bestseller, just like it was in the UK when bookstores couldn’t keep it in stock. I ripped through it in one sitting and then read it again, twice. After that I warned Duana that it would ruin her productivity, she didn’t listen, and wouldn’t you know, she couldn’t get anything done either. So if you haven’t already, and you’re burning through content right now, put this at the top of the list. Because the television series is coming.

The American and British trailers for Normal People on Hulu and BBC were released yesterday – all 12 episodes will drop on April 20 – and … I don’t remember it being this horny…? Like, yes, for sure, we meet Marianne and Connell just as they’re about to a start a secret relationship (in high school) that becomes the on-off love affair that dominates their next decade so, of course, the sex was there in the story. It’s just, watching these trailers, you’d think that this was a story just about the sex and not also about identity and class and privilege and the emotional wandering that has become a millennial preoccupation. Not that I’m complaining. Horny is good. I always want more horny. This is my main complaint about Chinese and Korean dramas – that there’s not enough horny, that the kisses are too chaste. GIVE ME SOME TONGUE, goddammit! And some writhing would be nice too! Clearly not a problem where Normal People is concerned. Arousal is the whole point of these trailers. I am definitely aroused watching them. But that arousal is quickly becoming anxiousness.

Because I can’t find any information on where Normal People will stream in Canada and I’m gonna need to mainline that sh-t the minute it becomes available. Can someone please send me a screener?

Here, if you haven’t already, check out the trailers. But maybe not if you have a Zoom call coming up because you’ll be as desperate as I am afterwards. For bangs? Marianne is making me want bangs so bad and the longer this lockdown goes on, the more tempted I am to go ham on my own hair.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
