Jennifer Lawrence: Sunrise is coming

It’s been a couple of weeks since Jennifer Lawrence decided on a random Tuesday during back-to-school week to join Instagram after saying for years that she would never – at least not publicly. It was the most JLaw way to launch JLaw on IG: sarcastic but not mean-spirited, over it but funny. And, naturally, she hasn’t posted since. I don’t think anyone is out here thinking that JLaw finally decided to be on out on these social media streets just to indulge her inner influencer. This has to be for business, blockbuster business.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping opens on November 20 in time for the American Thanksgiving box office. (I know that’s still two months away in the US but here in Canada, Thanksgiving is only two weeks away, we’re already thinking about Thanksgiving.) And projections are looking big – I’ve seen a couple of estimates that are putting the movie at $650 million total worldwide gross at the end of its theatrical run. The book is a bestseller, the universe has been established, and this is the Haymitch prequel, with both Jennifer and Josh Hutcherson confirmed to return as Katniss and Peeta. Early promotion has already started with the new cast introducing themselves to the audience. But we’ve yet to see JLaw, other than on IG, on the circuit yet.

Soon, though. If she’s on Instagram then she’ll likely have some involvement prior to the film’s release, it’s just a matter of how much of her we’ll be seeing given that, obviously, they’ll want to focus on the new Hunger Games generation of actors who are playing the predecessors of the original characters that became cultural icons. But also use her enough because… well… she’s her. It’s been a year since she was on a press tour for a movie – Die, My Love. And that cycle pretty much ended in January at the Golden Globes because the film wasn’t more of a factor during award season. I’m excited to see what her red carpet approach will be, especially since she changed stylists from Jamie Mizrahi to Ryan Hastings not too long ago, which resulted in that banger of a Givenchy dress from the Globes.
