Six years ago, I wrote about Kristen Stewart’s intention to direct her first feature film, which she intended to adapt from Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir, The Chronology of Water. It feels insane to think about things said and done six years ago, everything pre-2020 feels like a completely different world that has very little to do with our world today, but one thing linking then and now is Kristen Stewart’s feature directorial debut, because she did it.
The Chronology of Water is currently in post-production, KStew directed it, she’s credited as a co-writer, and she also produced it. The long-time KStew stan in me is so glad that project came together for her, and I can’t wait to see what Kristen Stewart’s third act looks like (the first two were child star and indie darling). But I raised a brow at the part where she produced The Chronology of Water, too, because six years ago KStew was swearing up and down she wouldn’t get into producing. Back then she said, “I’ll never produce a movie, I promise you. I will never set up a production company.”
And I responded to that with: “Writing and directing is the goal, I get it, I just won’t be surprised if she ends up bagging a producer credit somewhere down the line, too.”
Obviously, someone got to her and pointed out that producing your own work is just another layer of control over the project, and it’s a sound financial decision, too. In fact, KStew HAS set up a production company, Nevermind Pictures, which she co-founded with her fiancé, Dylan Meyer, and producer Maggie McLean. Earlier this year, they set up a first-look deal with Fremantle, which also has a deal with Angelina Jolie’s shingle. What a difference a little time makes. We’re living in a different world, and Kristen Stewart has a production company.
Here is KStew enjoying LA’s perpetual sunshine yesterday with a friend.
