Jennifer Lopez returned as host for the 2025 American Music Awards after killing it just about a decade ago. As expected, she killed it once again in every aspect from the opening number to all her outfit changes.
Jennifer was doing what she does best when she becomes JLo, and we should be thanking her for that because anyone who watched last night’s show can acknowledge that she did everything she could to keep it going when the star power just… wasn’t there. But this woman only knows one gear: the hustle. Which is why she was the MVP and she knew it.
In a bold move, Jennifer opened the show with an acoustic rendition of her 2012 global smash “Dance Again”, giving full-on Super Bowl performance vibes and what sounded like live vocals – and they were pretty good! As good as she can give of course.
Here’s something that’s hilarious and iconic about JLo: she will always give an A+ high-budget performance no matter what the actual calibre of the show is. It could be the Grammys or a backyard bbq, she will never dial it down. In true JLo fashion, she breaks out into intense choreography to a medley of some of the biggest hits of the year. She danced to hits by Kendrick Lamar, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter, Tinashe, Billie Eilish and more… even though none of them were there. In fact, Benson Boone and Shaboozey were the only artists from the medley that were in fact present.
While the performance was intended to be honour other artists, the sheer fact that none of them were in the audience made it feel like a regular Jennifer Lopez concert, LOL. She even channels her inner Madonna by kissing some dancers on the mouth. I honestly had no reaction and just thought it was queens doing queen things, but some people online are up in arms. I’ll stick to the side of the internet that was gagged.

When the actual awards show had its flat-lining moments, Jennifer managed to save the energy with a show stopping look. If there’s one thing this bitch knows how to do it’s how to wear a f-cking dress. Jenny went through an impressive eight different outfits throughout the entirety of the show with looks ranging in styles and colours – all just as breathtaking as they are sexy. She kicked if off in a classic crystal-covered nude bodysuit which is essentially the pop diva essential now (thanks, Britney), then eventually switched through a number of different dresses and jumpsuits. One thing I always admire about Jennifer is her dedication to being a real star and serving us real glamour. She may get some heat for that today on TikTok but it’s shows like this that remind us just how bad we actually really need stars like her since they are so rare and far between nowadays.
My two personal favourite looks of the evening were maybe the most risqué ones of the bunch (big surprise there MC). The first being the black textured jumpsuit that has a completely open back sitting just above that famous ass. Jennifer is giving seduction and the pin straight hair adds a layer of luxury to the entire situation that gave me life. Second is the metallic gown with cut outs and sheer skirt that she wore to introduce Gloria Estefan. Whether it’s the outfit or the abs that caught my attention is beside the point – either way she got it.

After a pretty tumultuous 2024, the good thing for Jen is that she really can go nowhere but up at this point and she is determined to do just that. She’s about to embark on a series of international sold-out shows and even used last night’s awards (which were held in Las Vegas) as a way to announce her own upcoming Las Vegas residency, “Up All Night”. This will be Jennifer’s second residency after a successful run on the strip from 2015-2018. Last night’s awards, however, while definitely a great moment for Jennifer, were a dud and it was clear the entire time that Jennifer carried it, and almost served as her way to show the audience that no matter how much you all try to bring her down, you’ll wear out before she stops trying.
