Justin and Hailey power up
Justin and Hailey Bieber were seen a couple of times yesterday, both dressed casually, first at a café and then meeting up with Kendall and Kylie Jenner for dinner. All of them of course were just at Coachella for both of JB’s headlining weekends – and despite the controversy and criticism, for Justin and Hailey in particular, it was a massively successful two weeks, as they’ve now pretty much levelled up as a power couple.
Because while so much of the discourse around Justin’s performance was about how lo-fi it was, whether or not it was worth the wait and the ticket price and staying up to stream, now that the dust has settled, literally, the fact that has emerged is that, well, for the Biebers the festival was an extremely lucrative enterprise. Justin was paid a record $10 million for his performances and the demand for the tickets – reportedly the highest demand in Coachella history – was enough for Coachella to rationalise agreeing to that rate. But JB also set a record in merch sales: $15 million worth of Skylrk merch was sold during Coachella from both in-person and online sales. Add up those numbers… and now consider the stripped down production of his set, that for part of it he just opened up his laptop and cruised through old videos on YouTube – LOL if you’re him and his team.
And LOL at those who persist in their hatred and harassment of Hailey because she married Justin, or whatever it is that they’re so interminably mad about. Because his win is also her win and vice-versa. Hailey is a Skylrk brand ambassador, she fronted their campaign in February.
Right before Coachella, the Biebers launched the new Rhode line of acne patches, “Spotwear”. And the aesthetic of the patches is a colour combination of both their brands, Rhode and Skylrk seamlessly blending.
This is happening as Hailey approaches the one-year mark of the announcement that Rhode had been acquired by elf Beauty in a blockbuster billion-dollar deal. So as Vogue said in an article published about their business moves, these two are at the helm of a “two-pronged business empire, the extent of which was fully on display across both weekends of Coachella”… right out there in plain sight, not even being subtle about it, while social media was preoccupied, as usual, with the low-hanging gossip.
Justin’s red hoodie here is, no surprise, Skylrk, the logo is pretty obvious. I’ve used a couple of Rhode products here and there but the Skylrk gear is not my thing. If we’re talking about hoodies though, I just got one this week that I am obsessed with, not at all the same vibe as Skylrk but casual and roomy and summer and chill. It’s slouchy and comfortable, it will go over jeans, denim shorts, any shorts actually, a linen slip dress or skirt… or your swimsuit, at the beach, a quick pullover coverup. Which is why there’s “beach” in the name.
The Banana Republic Cotton Beach Hooded Sweater (this is an affiliate link). I got it in the navy blue stripe because it’s a classic. Seriously I might live in this all summer. Also it’s 30% off right now. The other colourway is khaki beige and it’s pretty chic too.
What else happened today…
Jon Favreau is talking about how he was wrong about a major MCU decision – and he’s right that he was wrong but he’s not wrong about why he was wrong and how well it was handled. He gave us my favourite Avenger, and that scene remains… well… I can’t even talk about it! (Pajiba)
The Fug Girls’ headline about what Matthew Rhys was wearing didn’t make sense to me until I scrolled down and then understood why they were perplexed. At the same time, I get it, I get it from him and it also adds to why he and Keri Russell work. That’s his personality on his feet, LOL. (Go Fug Yourself)
Kristen Stewart has been married for a year and her wife, Dylan Meyer, celebrated by giving us footage of the time KStew and Alia Shawkat got high together. A generous gift for all of us but especially our site manager, Emily. (Autostraddle)
I thought this would be obvious but I guess a PSA is necessary – do not use AI when you’re coloring your own hair. (Celebitchy)
I have not watched a single minute of The Secret Life of Mormon Wives, but it surrounds me, everyone I know is into it, including Duana. Bobbi Althoff is not a Mormon, as far as anyone knows, but she’s joining the show. Someone explain this to me. (The Cut)
