Lainey's Best Dressed - Claire Danes as Juliet in 2026

My first view of Claire Danes on the Emmys red carpet last night was from the side. Kinda like this photo below, except she was moving, it wasn’t a still shot… and immediately, with the shape of that shoulder, which I didn’t know at the time was just one shoulder, my mind went to… well… I’ll get into that in a minute.

The shoulder invoking a wing of course, for a girl who saw the movie on opening weekend when it opened THIRTY YEARS AGO this October. So we’re just a month away from the anniversary of the release of a film that, no exaggeration, was a seminal cultural experience for an entire generation of us. First of all, it’s Angela Chase as Juliet Capulet, My So-Called Life meets Shakespeare. But it’s also Leonardo DiCaprio before Titanic, and the point I’m making here about him is that while Titanic, sure, became the biggest movie, mega box office, king of the world, blah blah blah… the hard crushing on Leo started before Jack and Rose getting steamy in the car on the boat. It started with Leo as Romeo eye f-ckng Claire as Juliet through a fish tank, with Des’ree’s dulcet voice as the soundtrack.

Sometimes I forgot that Paul Rudd is a jump-scare in that moment, LOL FOREVER.

But this is cinema! Forever cinema! It’s the scene that inspired my whole take on “memory eyes”, the idea that we see some people, eternally, through our memories of them instead of how they actually look in the present. This is the Leo that millions of people were thinking they were seeing when they were watching One Battle After Another, ha.

But you could also say that the “memory eyes” kicked in for me when Claire showed up at the Emmys in this silver Armani Privé. It’s not a white slip dress, she’s not wearing white angel wings, but the allusion is there in the shape, in the curve of her shoulder, the smoothness of her skin – more tan now than it was when she was Juliet but it’s the same body, and the same smile. She makes the case for not f-cking with your lips. As an actor who has played characters that have become so personal to an audience, characters that identify so closely with formative periods in the lives of those who were watching, a smile is a signature – familiar and comforting, and also professionally reliable. When I see that smile, and for that matter, when I hear her voice (because she’s known for that too), and how it teeters between elation and the shape her mouth makes before she starts crying, I trust immediately that we are in for a Performance. Let’s not pretend that Claire Danes’s IMDb isn’t just a long list of straight bangers.

So, to go back to Claire and her Emmys dress, this is what makes it the best, for me, whether or not it was intentional. But also, it’s also just a striking look. More striking on this carpet in particular since so much of the trending was towards the delicate silhouetting – slinky and lace and falling straps and bias cuts. Claire came in with bold structure, in metal over pastel and the effect was curious… because if you made the case that this look was a hybrid of both Juliet’s fairy and Romeo’s soldier, I would back you up.
