Because the Gotham Awards removed their budget cap on eligible films—meant to direct the awards toward the indie sector—Barbie was eligible this year. They only got one nomination, for Ryan Gosling who was a no-show, but most of Team Barbie showed up as they were also recipients of the new Global Icon and Creator Tribute.
Margot Robbie was there along with her husband and fellow producer Tom Ackerly, as well as Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach, and Laura Dern in a Barbie shirt. She counts! Laura is Team Barbie! Also, I like Margot’s little cape.
What kills me most, though, are Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. They co-wrote Barbie, a deeply weird, borderline surreal yet hilarious movie, so we KNOW they are not THAT dour, yet they are out here looking like a couple of sourpusses. I am putting it down to a quirk of red carpet posing, which is uncomfortable and difficult to make look natural, because they seemed a lot more chipper inside. But still. It’s kind of funny that they wrote one of the best comedies of the year and showed up frowning.
