Dear Gossips,
Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Pedro Pascal, and Joseph Quinn, aka the cast of The Fantastic Four, were at CCXP Mexico this past weekend to promote the movie which comes out on July 25. But that’s not Pedro’s next movie. His next movie is Materialists, opening soon, on June 13, just ten days away, so he’ll be in New York soon to join director Celine Song and co-stars Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans for the premiere. If you’ve been visiting this site over the last few months, you know this is my most anticipated movie of the summer – a proper rom-com with three big stars, gimme!
Fandango released an interview with the three of them a few days ago (video below). My favourite part of the discussion is when they’re asked about the genre, specifically referring to a comment that Celine made about how rom-coms should not be dismissed as fluff. And Dakota argues that stories about love are important and serious, even if they make us laugh. Then Pedro jumps in and says, with so much earnestness I wanted to hug him, the love is “high stakes” – and it IS. Who among us, when it comes to love, hasn’t felt the stakes of it, hasn’t had it take over our entire lives? So why diminish stories about the pursuit of something that is so essentially human?
Anyway, back to the point … which is Pedro and our collective big ass crush on this beautiful, sensitive man. Who is one of over 100 celebrities making headlines for signing an open letter yesterday in support of 2SLGBTQ+ youth and “denouncing the proposal to eliminate federal funding for the social program behind the suicide prevention hotline for at-risk LGBTQ+ youth”. This was in response to The Trevor Project announcing that it is “on the verge of having $25 million in federal funding stripped from its 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline’s LGBTQ+ Youth Specialized Services”. You can read the letter here.
For Pedro, this is not new. He has long been an ally of the queer community, an outspoken advocate for the marginalised – and he certainly hasn’t backed down during now that this bullsh-t administration is in power in the United States.
So to see him with this kind of success, with a huge TV series that just wrapped, a rom-com on the way in theatres, and one of this summer’s biggest tentpoles a month later… good things only for Pedro Pascal!
Yours in gossip,
Lainey
