Pamela Anderson is campaigning
My biggest question mark for awards season this year is how seriously will the Oscar establishment take Pamela Anderson in The Last Showgirl? They SHOULD take her very seriously, because her performance is terrific. It’s so good that were it anyone else in the role, I have no doubt they’d be a major contender for a Best Actress nomination. But this is Pamela Anderson, a Hollywood laughingstock so disrespected no one even had sympathy when she was the victim of an intimate crime and major privacy invasion. You know a big way to show Pamela Anderson some respect now? Take her work seriously.
Some people are, to be fair. She received a nomination from the Gotham Awards, and over the weekend, Anderson was honored with the Art of Light Acting Award at the Miami Film Festival GEMS event, which highlights their selection of the year’s best films. Anderson was on hand with filmmaker Gia Coppola for a Q&A, she’s making the rounds, very game to participate in the trophy trail and the awards machine. The establishment just has to give her a chance. Hopefully, she’ll keep building momentum through December—The Last Showgirl has a limited release beginning on December 13, before expanding in January—and will land some more nominations. I am rooting for her SO hard.
Speaking of the Gotham Awards, though, when the nominations were announced Lainey wondered why Angelina Jolie wasn’t nominated for Maria. I shrugged it off because Pablo Larraín doesn’t often factor into those awards, but Angelina will receive the Performer Tribute at the Gothams next month. So that’s why she wasn’t nominated, she’s getting a spotlight award.
