I got an email from a reader called G who tells me that this is a big deal in Indian culture. You don’t just bring anyone home. It was a big deal when I was growing up too, in a Chinese home. My Chinese friends and I used to laugh about this all the time, seeing our white friends having a boyfriend or girlfriend over every grade through school and it wasn’t a thing at all but if we did that with our Chinese family, we’d either have to be planning a wedding or … nothing. Nothing as in I don’t even know what the “or” is in this case because we’d be too scared sh-tless to find out. I can’t even think about it without feeling like my ma is glaring at my back ready to fry my ass.
