One of the most highly anticipated titles to world premiere in Venice is Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, based on William S Burroughs’s novella by the same name, starring Daniel Craig. The photo call was today, the gala is happening tonight, and it seems Daniel will have a date on the red carpet. We’ll come back to that in a minute.

Given the talent involved here, this film was always on the long list for award season possibilities. And now those chances are getting even better because Queer was just acquired for distribution a few days ago by A24. By now we should all be familiar with A24’s cult following and Oscar record so the hype will only grow from here. And with that in mind, you’ll note that Rachel Weisz is with Daniel on this trip to Venice. We don’t see them together often, we’re lucky if we get them once a year. So if he really does emerge as a contender, will the side bonus be that we’ll be getting a lot more of mom and dad?

Here they are arriving together the other day, and having lunch together yesterday. As you can see, he’s wearing his hair much longer usual. People didn’t seem to be feeling it over at The Squawk when I posted a link in the chat this weekend. I don’t totally mind it and mostly I’m curious whether there’s a purpose behind it. Because Daniel’s been Benoit Blanc over the summer, working on Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the third film in the Knives Out Universe. Does this mean that Benoit will have a new look for this movie? Will he and Hugh Grant, the flopsy-haired king of 90s movies, be a flopsy-haired couple?

Sarah has more thoughts on Queer, including the Joaquin Phoenix connection, in her Squawk newsletter today. In the meantime, I’ll be here waiting eagerly for this red carpet tonight. It’s been a long, long time since Daniel and Rachel showed up at a film premiere together.
