If the theme of yesterday’s postings was celebrity love, today the theme appears to be: back. The Clooneys are back in Lake Como. The stars are back in Paris for Haute Couture week in the front row. And Cannes is happening, a few weeks later than usual, and after it was completely cancelled last year, action has resumed on the Croisette, and here’s this year’s festival jury president, Spike Lee, alongside his co-jurors, including Mati Diop, whose film, Atlantique, won the Grand Prize in Cannes in 2019. I posted about Mati last May and how she became the first Black female filmmaker to enter a film in competition at the festival.
Also taking part at the photo call today ahead of opening night was Jodie Foster, who will receive an honourary Palme d’Or. Nice moment between her and Spike here…
…which only makes me mad again about Inside Man and the fact that he couldn’t do the sequel the way he wanted to.
Also attached – Maggie Gyllenhaal, another member of the jury, in a perfect jumpsuit for the occasion. And then there are the actors who are there to premiere their films, including Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver, the stars of Annette. Marion, of course, is a Cannes regular, so I can imagine it was pretty special for her to be back. And you’ll note, she’s wearing… biker shorts? Into it. Seriously, who is sh-tting on this look, really? And how can you not love these booties, these f-cking amazing booties!
The back view will have you swooning.
The fashion, the view, these are familiar sights, sights that didn’t happen in 2020, and that people are eagerly recreating again now. And the excitement must be contagious because… is that… could it be…
That Adam Driver is actually smiling at the cameras, waving at the media, looking almost enthusiastic to be there?!
