It’s October! It’s spooky season! You know what that means…it’s time for a rom-com! Seriously, there’s a history of romantic comedies coming out in October. I clocked it first twenty years ago with Sweet Home Alabama, when I spent half the film pondering the October timing (because I was bored), and then I looked back and realized that in the Eighties, Mystic Pizza tricked everyone into thinking October is a good time for rom-coms. It’s like horror movie counterprogramming. This year’s sacrificial rom-com is Love Language, starring Chloe Grace Moretz.

You know what? It doesn’t look half bad. Like it doesn’t look GREAT, but it doesn’t look bad. It looks like a solid “night in” rom-com option. Chloe Grace Moretz stars as Lou, a stymied writer who ends up writing wedding vows for others. She ends up juggling two men, charismatic Dash, played by Anthony Ramos, and her former college crush, Warren, played by Manny Jacinto. Already this is a very dishy cast, but throw in Lukas Gage and Billie Lourd as The Friends, and Isabel May as The Bride In The Way? VERY dishy cast.

Also, let’s hear it for Chicago coming back as a rom-com setting! I need a new Chicago-set rom-com that actually filmed in the city, because I need movie references to explain my apartment search to my mom. There are only so many times I can reference Lucy’s apartment in While You Were Sleeping. Love Language is covering the city, I am seeing lakefront view high rises, the corn cobs downtown—I toured a condo there, the original 1963 pink metal kitchen was FULLY INTACT, but I passed because the bathrooms were nightmarish and I simply cannot do another renovation—and lofts, I must get my mother to watch this movie so that I can use it as a real estate reference.

I also feel like I haven’t seen Chloe Grace Moretz in a minute, outside of reporting on her marriage to Kate Harrison, but she does work steadily, though recently it’s been a lot of ensembles and voiceover roles. It’s nice to see her back in the leading lady saddle. Though let’s hope Love Language turns out better than the last leading lady role that I remember her in, the borderline bizarre Shadow in the Cloud. The bar is on the floor.
