As you know, Mission: Impossible – Fallout opens this weekend. The reviews have been outstanding. Sarah’s review was just posted today and she too thinks it delivers on its promise, probably even OVER-delivers because who would Tom Cruise be if he wasn’t taking every stunt to levels no one else would imagine trying?
Ahead of the movie’s release then, here’s Tom on the cover of the new issue of PEOPLE Magazine. Remarkable because… when was the last time he covered a major magazine to promote a movie? I mean, he’s been on the cover of The National Enquirer, sure, but this is a promotion cover, this is old school, this almost feels like a throwback, from the time before Graydon Carter and Vanity Fair drew a line in the sand and pretty much called him a cult freak in 2012.
This is PEOPLE though, not in the business of picking fight with celebrities. So this story, not surprisingly, is all positive. I noted a couple of weeks ago that even though he remains one of Hollywood’s most recognisable names, I do not associate Tom with Hollywood anymore and PEOPLE confirms here that Tom is hardly ever there, preferring instead to live in hotels in London when he’s working and when he’s not working, he’s been spending time in Clearwater, Florida, the home of Scientology HQ, where he’s been renovating a penthouse apartment.
“He’s very relaxed when he’s here,” says a local source.
And that’s about as deep as PEOPLE gets where the Church is concerned. That’s about as deep as the story gets where anything is concerned. Tom himself is only quoted twice – once about how much he loves making movies (NO KIDDING) and the second time towards the end of the piece about how hard he works and how he stays motivated. Maybe more excerpts will be released through the week but I can’t imagine that we’re going to get anything insightful.
Suri does come up though. Very briefly. Here’s the paragraph:
He’s also close with daughter Isabella, 25, who lives in London with her husband. As for speculation about his relationship with his youngest daughter, Suri, 12, who lives with Holmes in L.A. And New York City, neither star has discussed the situation publicly. “He loves all his children,” says a source. “And each of them has a right to their own story.”
Clever sidestep. And consistent, really, with the non-information in the rest of the article. After all, the title of the article is about the “mysteries” of his life. We don’t really learn anything we didn’t already know. Which, I guess, is the pivot here. Thirteen years ago, Tom Cruise told us everything we needed to know about how he felt about Katie Holmes on Oprah Winfrey’s couch. Now they’re back to selling Tom on the fact that he’s an enigma. A running enigma. Like literally and figuratively. Like as long as you see him running, you don’t need to know anything else about him. Agree or disagree?
