Lewis Pullman is henceforth and forever to be known as Emmy Nominee Lewis Pullman. He’s been campaigning hard for Lessons in Chemistry, in which he plays sexy and lovable scientist Calvin Evans, so it’s not like he came out of nowhere for his nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series, but he was a bit of a longshot, so his nomination is a pleasant surprise.
I get to gloat now, though, because I came out of Top Gun: Maverick telling everyone to pay attention to Bob, yes, nerdy bespectacled Bob, because under the dweeby haircut is a HOT DUDE. Like yeah, Glen Powell is going to be a Movie Star, but we’re going to be talking about Lewis Pullman, too (and Monica Barbaro, for that matter). I remember texting Lainey when I got the Lessons in Chemistry screeners and warning her she wasn’t ready for how hot Lewis is in the series, and while he IS very hot—something sci-fi show Outer Range also made a meal of—he’s also compelling as Calvin, so compelling the showrunner wrote new material just to keep bringing him back.
And now he’s an Emmy nominee for his performance, and at just 31 years old. He has SO much road ahead of him, it’s exciting to watch his rise. He has several projects lined up, most notably Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, but he also has a thriller with Elizabeth Banks called Skincare, and at some point Warner Bros. Discovery is going to drop the Stephen King adaptation Salem’s Lot on Max. So there’s a lot to look forward to with Lewis Pullman, but if you really want to get up to speed on the lowkey hottie poised for a takeover, go back and watch Bad Times at the El Royale, in which Pullman plays troubled motel manager Miles. More than Maverick or Lessons in Chemistry, that’s the role that shows everything Lewis Pullman can do, which is chiefly give great performances while looking very good.
