Tomdaya: Will it be a record?

The Odyssey just opened, it continues to be the talk of the film industry, with Matt Belloni noting in his latest Puck newsletter that “45% of American moviegoers this weekend saw The Odyssey in Imax or another premium format when the usual share for a film on opening weekend is around 22%”.

But another blockbuster is on the horizon: Spider-Man: Brand New Day, also starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, so they were back out there on the promotional circuit, in Mexico last night for a fan event. And, as usual, Z and Law Roach switched style gears smoothly.

It’s a gorgeous black dress made more gorgeous on her. It’s Spider-Man with the lace and the fringe looking like the webbing that comes out of the character’s wrists but also fashion, not too on the nose but, like, we get it, we know immediately that this outfit is for this particular movie and not the other big ass movie that she was just part of.

But that’s what these two are doing back-to-back, The Odyssey and Spider-Man, nbd. Could it be an even bigger deal, though? The Odyssey will no doubt continue to dominate at the box office this coming weekend. Most Christopher Nolan movies have legs and given the hype around this one, it should still be performing with new moviegoers who are waiting a couple of weeks before seeing it or others who are going back for a second or third viewing. I’ve already heard of people who’ve seen it twice – and it’s only been at the cineplex for four full days.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will top the box office, no doubt, on opening weekend. But The Odyssey has a very good chance of coming in second, and if that happens, it would mean that Tomdaya will be in BOTH the top movie and the second place movie at the same time, together. Is that historic? I’m not a film historian and I’m also lazy, I did exactly one Google search to find out if it would indeed be an unprecedented achievement for a couple and I don’t trust the answer and didn’t bother to fact-check it because we’ll know soon enough. For what it’s worth, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds were one and two a couple of summers ago with Deadpool & Wolverine and It Ends With Us but that’s not the same because they were in their respective movies but not both in both movies.

Something to pay attention to then in just over a week when Brand New Day opens. On top of the looks that Zendaya will be parading. After that, knowing these two, they’ll probably go back inside for as long as they can.
