Anne Hathaway: Knicks, Oscar, Verity
– 4 min read
In that order? Probably.
But first, I really loved the Prabal Gurung dress that Anne Hathaway wore to the Verity premiere on Tuesday night in New York City. The shape is gorgeous, the train is so pretty, and that was the perfect hairstyle for the look. With a hair clip!
Last night Annie was on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote Verity, opening tomorrow. A quick note on Verity – several weeks ago, when writing about the trailer, Sarah posited that it was a comedy. Her full review is coming soon but from the early reaction to the movie that happened this week, a lot of people have remarked that Annie gives a scream of a performance, that she understands the assignment: not earnest but camp, it’s the only way to play it. So it won’t surprise me if this film becomes a queer cult classic, with Mother Annie Prada Penelope Verity serving a full menu for the gay appetite.
At the same time, while of course she’s doing her job – because she’s always a professional goddamn it! – and promoting the movie, the Knicks came up just as much as the movie with Jimmy Fallon last night because, well, she was jokingly credited for the Knicks run a few months ago. Annie was born and raised and resides in New York City. She has been a long-time Knicks fan. She’s having just as big of a year as they are.

If you missed it back in April, the origin story for that moment with OG Anunoby, you can watch that back here.
The Knicks came up again when Annie and Jimmy played Best Thing Ever and she was asked to choose between another Oscar and another Knicks championship. She will most likely be nominated for Best Supporting Actress this season for her performance in The Odyssey, and she’s probably the frontrunner in the category at this point. But she went with the Knicks… which, by the way, as she acknowledged, was extremely difficult for her. So it’s entirely performative and my favourite part is when a few seconds later she jokes that “I need attention”. And it’s adorable.
Oh the vicissitudes of fame! That’s another thing Annie and the Knicks have in common. The lows have been low but the highs have been SO f-cking high. As already mentioned, Anne Hathaway has had a banger of a year, part of a general upswing of popularity and cultural belovedness that she’s been enjoying for the last couple of years or so. We’ve seen a lot of Annie in 2026… and there’s been no fatigue whatsoever.
