Anne Hathaway Raises Questions At Bvlgari

New York and Toronto don’t always have similar weather. But last night in Toronto was particularly gorgeous – one of those balmy, breezy nights that feels almost tropical and laughs in the face of ever needing a jacket. It was amazing and felt like you would have the energy to walk all night and stay awake forever.

So when I saw Anne Hathaway posing with Dua Lipa and Lisa at the Bvlgari Serpentino event, I originally thought the breeze was just …breezy. But then:

I would go so far as to say this is Windy. The giveaway is Dua’s hair, flapping like a promotional inflatable at a car dealership. It still looks awesome, of course, but it’s undeniably dramatic. I watched this clip a ridiculous number of times before I realized I was also reacting to Anne’s dress, so calm-looking in the front, and without a lot of movement for obvious reasons… but then, watch it again. Look at the reflection of it in the gold sculpture behind her:

That is absolutely wind, and not merely a breeze. The event was held  up on the High Line, which maybe exacerbates the bluster factor, but it’s not insignificant! 

It’s much less noticeable from this angle, so we can properly talk about the fashion and my other questions:

First – do we think there were non-choker options available? I get that a cohesive thematic look is important but I as I grow more mature, a choker is second only to a turtleneck on the list of things that make me panic irrationally.

Second – Did Anne Hathaway subconsciously position herself between Lisa and Dua as a style bridge? Because Lisa’s outfit is predictably extravagant (I am looking very much forward to what she wears to her TIFF premiere tomorrow), and Dua’s looks like she’s a bartender in the year 2000, and yes of course that is complimentary.

Third – You might be asking how long Annie lasted in those heels, which would be reasonable even if she wasn’t pregnant. Personally, I want to know if she tried to stay outside. It’s been a very long time since I was pregnant, but I have a visceral memory of going to meet Lainey for dinner days before my eventual child eventually arrived on a windy day like this, and feeling like a furnace. There were people cinching their sweaters tighter around them and I was storming down the street in a tank top.

All this to say that she’s done a very impressive run of press in conjunction with this pregnancy, and I actually wonder if being this busy is helpful to not think about the mundanities of pregnancy, or conversely the mundanities of the job?  Like, she’s gonna choose a loose flowing dress, it’s gonna look awesome, job done. Her next film this year is Verity, which premieres October 2nd – is the peak look still to come?
