Last month, Zendaya participated in The Hollywood Reporter’s Drama Actress roundtable, now a regular award season campaign stop. Zendaya was representing her work in Euphoria, which aired last summer and thus was ineligible for Emmys consideration. One year later though and, clearly, the Television Academy still remembers because she received the first Emmy nomination of her career yesterday in the Best Actress Drama category alongside some heavy-hitters, like Sandra Oh and Jennifer Aniston.
For Zendaya, Euphoria marked a new step in her career, transitioning her out of the wholesome teen Disney projects she’d previously been attached to – which is why she and Law Roach decided that her Met Gala 2019 look would be her fairy tale princess exit. Zendaya Cinderella was the final act of Zendaya Stage One. Euphoria would begin airing a month later.
As we can see from this example, once again, clothing is often a part of an overall career strategy. And it was of the strategy for Z at the Emmys in 2019. The first season of Euphoria had wrapped. We’d all seen her showcase the depth of talent that had been promised for so long. She’s successfully made the move from child star to young adult actor. And all of that was in that dress. You remember the dress? It was green. It was unbelievable. It is why Duana and I took her out of contention from now on for any “Best” consideration – because Zendaya is playing on a whole other level.
The Emmys are scheduled for September 20. Right now we don’t know what that will look like, whether or not there will be an awards show the way we’re used to seeing award shows. Whether or not there will be a red carpet. I mean, I hope so – but only if they can do it safely. Right now, it doesn’t seem like California has been able to significantly control the spread of coronavirus.
In other Zendaya news, she and Jacob Elordi were last seen together in LA in March but at some point he returned home to Australia. He’s been promoting The Kissing Booth 2, costarring his ex, Joey King, the last couple of weeks. As of this writing, Jacob, who is a cast member on Euphoria, has not publicly congratulated Z on her Emmy nomination. Does that mean something or does it mean nothing?
And finally, speaking of Euphoria, there’s a song called “Euphoria” performed by Jungkook off of BTS’s Love Yourself: Answer album. And it played during the final episode of Euphoria season one. Here’s the scene – the song kicks in around the one minute mark:
