We’ve been speculating for weeks about that fifth Best Actor spot, assuming that Michael Keaton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne, and Steve Carell would be in for four. And we’ve seen Jake Gyllenhaal surging. Well, he’s almost there. The Screen Actors have sent him an invitation. He deserves it. And he hasn’t really been jerking off too hard for it either. This is a nice win for him already. Also, he gets to go with his sister, Maggie, who’s been nominated for Best Actress in a Miniseries. Maggie is up against – among others – Ellen Burstyn for Flowers In The Attic. So now you know how actors vote. They look at the list and don’t want to cross off anyone of a certain age. Clint Eastwood’s been gliding on that for years.

Birdman did really well today at the SAGs. Best Ensemble, Best Actor (Keaton), Best Supporting Actress (Emma Stone – yay!), and Best Supporting Actor (Edward Norton). I LOVE the Best Supporting Actor categories. In addition to Norton, it’s:

JK Simmons (likely winner?)
Robert Duvall (RDJ’s been working hard for him behind the scenes)
Ethan Hawke
Our favourite… Mark Ruffalo (YES!)

Ruffalo is actually up for two awards. He’s also been nominated for Best Actor in a Miniseries for The Normal Heart. Benedict Cumberbatch is also a multiple nominee – The Imitation Game (Best Actor and Ensemble) and Sherlock. And Naomi Watts too for Best Supporting Actress in St Vincent and as part of the ensemble in Birdman.

Watts, by the way, took out Laura Dern in Wild who, for many, delivers the strongest performance in that film. Which, again, reflects how ridiculous some of these decisions are. Just like Jennifer Aniston “got ugly”, Watts put on a bad accent and wore sh-tty lipstick. Actors be impressed.

Except… not with Selma.

So as we come of the year of 12 Years A Slave, the film categories couldn’t be whiter.

On the television side…

GROSS.

Adrien Brody has two nominations.

Tatiana Maslany, who has been ignored by the Emmys, was recognised by the actors – and actor vanity would have been in play here too. She plays how many clones? Maslany is in a category with Viola Davis, Julianna Margulies, Robin Wright, Maggie Smith, and Claire Danes. No Kerry Washington.

Isn’t it time to get rid of Downton Abbey and Homeland from these parties? Isn’t it time??? And f-ck, while we’re at it, Boardwalk Empire? I was all about Boardwalk for the first two seasons. Since then? Sorry. You lost me. Modern Family and Big Bang Theory apply here too. Awesome for Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Orange Is The New Black for making it into the comedy categories but please, please how is it that Parks & Recreation only earned ONE nomination (for Amy Poehler)???
