Sebastian Stan makes the leap

Over the last couple years Sebastian Stan has enjoyed a visible career bounce thanks to Marvel, picking up roles in big-deal movies, like The Martian, and Steven Soderbergh’s return to feature film, Logan Lucky, as well as higher profile indies like We Have Always Lived in the Castle. And there’s other stuff, too—Stan is working a lot. But he just got his biggest non-Marvel role as he’s going to star opposite Margot Robbie in I, Tonya, as Tonya Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly. I LOVE this casting. Stan is really good at playing smarmy jerks, and I can’t wait to see what kind of mustache he grows to play Gillooly.

I still have cognitive dissonance about Robbie playing Tonya Harding, but the project is shaping up well. Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl) is going to direct, and Miramax—yes, they’re still around—just picked up the US distribution rights, plus the script was named to the 2016 Black List, which is really stretching the definition of “unproduced screenplay”, since it has a producer and a start date. It’ll start filming in the first quarter of 2017, as Robbie is expected to shoot her Harley Quinn spin-off during summer 2017.

This casting announcement does make me wonder if this means that Bucky Barnes won’t appear in Black Panther, though. The combined Avengers shoot will go through next summer, but it’s not like Stan will need to be there for the whole thing (see also: co-starring in this movie). But Black Panther shoots during the same frame as I, Tonya. That sort of looks to me like, “You’re not in Black Panther, so use your free time to make another movie.” Black Panther has been, thus far, a very tight ship. It starts filming January, so either way, we’ll know soon enough.
