Anne Hathaway does Fran Fine
Anne Hathaway is currently promoting two movies, The Devil Wears Prada 2—which press tour feels interminable, it has always been, it will always be—and Mother Mary. Both films are about fashion, and for both films, Annie is pulling out all the sartorial stops.
Yesterday, Annie stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and wore a drop dead gorgeous black suit with a skirt, towering heels, and big sunglasses. This is giving Fran Fine realness. It’s the silhouette. I went to a talk given by Brenda Cooper, the costumer designer for the first several seasons of The Nanny, and she talked about establishing Fran Fine’s “silhouette”, and how Fran could wear anything as long as it fit the silhouette: fitted/structured top, short bottom, dark tights, heels.

The concept of the “silhouette” really stuck with me. Brenda Cooper talked about how adhering to a consistent shape gave them a lot of room to play with fashion on the show. They could put Fran in some really wild clothes, and she still looked put together because she still “looked like Fran”. Like no matter how crazy the clothes got, the audience always went with it because Fran always looked like Fran. The shape never changed, even if the colors and styles did.
Now I kind of want to see a remake of The Nanny with Anne Hathaway. Change whatever details you want, Maxwell Sheffield would totally be a venture capitalist or tech CEO in the 21st century, whatever, just leave The Fran Fine Silhouette alone. Fran Fine must always be dressed exactly like this.
