As we’ve been saying for the past week or so, this is Emmys season and we are in a final push for nominations as the nomination voting period closes next week on June 12.

This weekend Netflix hosted a campaign event for their breakout hit Nobody Wants This with cast and crew present to also conveniently drop a trailer announcing the release date for season two.

Season one of Nobody Wants This was super popular but also sloppy. Which played out both in the episodes but also apparently in the writers room as it was reported last fall when there was a showrunner change along with the announcement that season two was greenlit. This explained, for me, why some of the storylines were so uneven, almost random at times. So it’ll be interesting to see when the second season premieres in October how they’ve been able to adjust with new leadership.

As for the Emmys, Nobody Wants This should contend in multiple categories, including Outstanding Comedy and in the lead and supporting categories although the hype from last year may be more muted in comparison since it’s been a while and other shows have risen in the meantime. Like Seth Rogen’s The Studio, the buzziest new comedy to come out this year and currently considered the favourite alongside Hacks. But that’s also why campaigning is so important – to get back out there and remind voters about your show while, concurrently, promoting the upcoming season. It worked on me.

I watched Nobody Wants This quickly and enjoyed it, despite the story issues, but I can’t say it stayed with me or that I’ve spent the last few months eagerly anticipating its return. So it needs to pick up some momentum to get through the nomination stage. And then from there, the nomination will be the celebration, especially for a rookie show that didn’t come in with any expectations to get to this position.
