Carey Mulligan wore all the orange
Beef’s second season debuts today on Netflix. It is my weekend watch, for sure. There was a screening last night in New York, and everyone wore grey except Carey Mulligan, who showed up in traffic cone orange velvet.

I don’t think I like it but it’s SO bright, maybe I do? I can’t tell if I like this, or if I’m just impressed that she wore so much color all at once. I also sort of like that her head styling is so minimal. From the neck up, it looks like Carey Mulligan forgot she had a press event last night, and there is something sort of cool about keeping it so casual on the hair and makeup front when the clothes are such a bold choice. It’s like she’s wearing all of the orange pigment in the world at once.
Oscar Isaac, meanwhile, looks handsome even when he’s not trying, and this baggy suit ensemble is the Oscar Isaac version of “not trying”.

Charles Melton, on the other hand, DID try with some sort of “sweatshirt over a suit” situation that I am not into at all. I am, however, super into Charles Melton walking around New York earlier in the day in a shirt that reads “Autumn Durald Arkapaw”.

Arkapaw just became the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Cinematography earlier this year. She was also the cinematographer on Melton’s 2019 film The Sun Is Also a Star. It makes me like Charles Melton that seven years later, he’s repping Autumn Durald Arkapaw like this.
The Beef screening also brought out Youn Yuh-jung, showrunner Lee Sung Jin, and Constance Wu. It has been a minute since I have seen Constance Wu!

I still think it is extremely weird we never got a sequel to Crazy Rich Asians. That movie was a huge hit, and even with all the turmoil at Warner Brothers over the last eight years, you think eventually someone would get around to wanting to make more money. I think we can all guess why they didn’t. Director Jon M. Chu says the sequel is now being “reimagined” as an HBO series.
I wonder if that is because after the success of the film, people, including screenwriter Adele Lim, wanted to be paid in a way that reflects that success, but by kicking the project over to HBO, they can bring on a new creative team and cast and that way, not have to give anyone from the movie raises. Super sh-tty if that is how it ends up going down. A rising tide should lift all boats, and Crazy Rich Asians was a huge tide for the studio. There is no reason beyond greed that a sequel shouldn’t benefit everyone.
